If your traveling to Abu Dhabi never missed out one of most outstanding mosque in the world. It’s not every day you find out where the world’s largest carpet is located. It’s here, in one of the largest mosques in the world that can accommodate more than 40,000 people. Unique lighting on the outside walls projects clouds and gets lighter and darker in relation to the phases of the moons. Why? Because the Islamic calendar is the lunar calendar.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.The largest mosque in the country, it is the key place of worship for daily prayers, Friday gathering and Eid prayers. During Eid it may be visited by more than 41,000 people.

The Grand Mosque was constructed between 1996 and 2007. It was designed by Syrian architect Yousef Abdelky.The building complex measures approximately 290 m (960 ft) by 420 m (1,380 ft), covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres), excluding exterior landscaping and vehicle parking.

The project was launched by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art. His final resting place is located on the grounds adjacent to the complex.

How to get there:

Location:  Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed St – Abu Dhabi

From Dubai take a Green Line Metro Station going to Creek and get down in “Al Ghubaiba Metro Station”. Take a bus “E100” going to Abu Dhabi it cost 50AED. From the bus station take a taxi going to Sheikh Zayed Mosque it cost most likely 50AED.

Rules & Regulations:

There is a modest dress code for the Mosque, remember it is a place of prayer and Islamic values not only should be respected but is an absolute must in the place of prayer. The following is a list of things you should take heed of while visiting the biggest mosque in the region.

1. Dress Code

Women:

Should have scarves covering their hair, a long dress and long sleeve top, not low in neckline, transparent or clingy or wear a shaila and abaya which will cover you fully.

Men:
Should not wear shorts at all. Long pants and shirts are fine.

2. Never smoke.

3. Never enter a mosque in shoes. You can remove these and leave them in a safe place if provided, if not put in a tie bag and keep at your side.

4. Do not eat or drink there especially in Ramadhan ( In public) and on normal days as the Mosque is not a place for eating ( Etiquette and respect).

5. Do not take photos of people without their permission. It is not allowed as far as I know.

6. Men are not allowed in areas of the women’s section where women pray.

7. Do not walk in front of people praying.

8. If people are performing prayers remember the following:

Keep your phones discreet. No loud tones, especially music.

Do not talk loud, have older kids keep quiet.
